Tuner itself is great, just what I required. Remote control is of the poorest quality I've ever seen. Information in user manual is incomplete and not intuitive.

Is the “phones” socket on the front for headphones? And does the volume control on the remote control this output?

Yes, the "phones" output on the front panel is for headphones. The volume of this output is controlled using the main volume dial on the front of the player or using the remote control, depending on which input source is being used
